Brisket Will Improve Your Life

In The Brisket Book: A Love Story with Recipes, author Stephanie Pierson writes, “Some foods will improve your meal, your mood, your day, your buttered noodles. Brisket will improve your life.” Brisket has been a standard at my mom’s house for Jewish holidays. And most good barbecue joints also have a tasty brisket. These are on different ends of the brisket spectrum, but both have a tender, savory, irresistible quality in common. Having just had my mom’s brisket this week at lunch on the first day of  Rosh Hashana, I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at brisket recipes that ReciFoto users have shared, starting of course, with my mom’s! I’ve made her recipe a bunch of times and it is always delicious, but it never comes out as good as hers.

You may be asking yourself, what is brisket? According to Wikipedia: “Brisket is a cut of meat from the breast or lower chest of beef or veal. The beef brisket is one of the nine beef primal cuts, though the precise definition of the cut differs internationally.” So, brisket is what you make of it.

Mom’s Chicken Recipes

Chicken is the top searched item in ReciFoto. And there are more than 1500 chicken recipes that have been submitted by our users. So why haven’t I used them as the theme of one of these weekly newsletters? I did not know where to start until this morning, when I decided to start in the beginning, with the chicken recipes my mom makes.

Iacono Chicken – The Iacono’s have a poultry farm in East Hampton, NY. This is a simple, delicious roast chicken recipe.

Baked Breaded Chicken

Chicken and Fruit – feel free to use butter instead of margarine!

Chicken Sauté with Oranges and Avocados – I don’t remember her making this but it sure does sound good

Sour Cream Baked Chicken – we call this one Grandma Chicken, and have it often

Chicken Favorite – again, feel free to substitute butter for margarine. I love this sauce.

Cumberland Chicken – another one I can’t resist!

You Say Tomato, I Say Tomahto

Nice tomatoes! They are one of the few consolations for the end of summer. I love getting grape or cherry tomatoes, cutting them in half, drizzle them with olive oil, a little salt, fresh oregano and basil, and put them in the oven at 225 degrees for hours until they are mostly dehydrated and chewy. Oh man. Buy twice as many as you think and they’ll still be gone really quickly. There are hundreds of recipes with tomato in the title on ReciFoto, and it was really hard to choose what to include. I went for variety and with my usual bias toward old and/or handwritten recipes, with a side of ones with names that caught my attention!

Fire and Ice Tomatoes (serve it at your next Game of Thrones party!)

Tomato Juice Cocktail à la Becker

Tomato Jelly

Sautéed Tomatoes

Fresh Tomato Sauce

Stewed Tomatoes

Cheese and Tomato Salad

Canned Tomatoes

Tomato Catsup (A peck is dry measure of eight quarts (or a quarter of a bushel!)

We didn’t even scrape the surface of all the delicious tomato recipes out there. I hope you dive deep into the tomato recipes and share your favorites on ReciFoto
